Target leaving Geelong

All comments to be attributed to Rebecca Casson, CEO of the Committee for Geelong.

"While Target has been an outstanding corporate citizen in our city, the Committee for Geelong is extremely disappointed to hear of their plans to move the Target head office to Melbourne, ending a 90-year association with Geelong.

Target has played a significant role in our community over many years and, with 900 staff employed at the headquarters in Geelong, our region will be greatly affected by this move.  Our thoughts are with those employees who are now facing redundancy.

We are very concerned with the comments made in regards to attracting talent to Target. Geelong has a highly skilled workforce and the success of other organisations, such as Cotton On, indicate that the quality of staffing options in our city are equivalent to those in Melbourne.

Target's announcement further reinforces the need to progress a shared vision for Geelong, complemented by co-ordinated strategic economic development activity.  This issue was highlighted in the recent Commission of Inquiry into the City of Greater Geelong.  We call on the Victorian State Government to make this a priority area for the new Commissioners of the City of Greater Geelong."
