LfG 18/19 Seminar: Innovation and Growth
- "We're innovating machines that sometimes think" - The founder
of an innovation and design thinking company
- "We're not Silicon Valley, we are Geelong" - A
multi-generational Geelong developing family
- "Work hard, which is easy when you do what you love" - A local
- "Without a firewall, a device connected to the internet will be
compromised within seven minutes" - A seasoned IT professional
The Innovation and Growth seminar saw our
leadership group consider topics from the power and necessity of
innovation, and the clever and creative reframing of Geelong's tech
and start-up space... To the almost impossibly simple and yet
staggeringly complex and important issue of having your IT systems
The group was challenged to delve into how people
consider, interact with, adapt to, and engage with change, and how
the framing of that change can drastically alter its effective
implementation. One lasting quote to stay with any leader who may
not want to wholeheartedly embrace the new world: "the speed and
pace of change will never be as slow as it is today!"
The Powerhouse Mills, as a key cog of Geelong's
Second City identity, is a hive of activity that embraces the
concepts of change and innovation. With some of Geelong's key
developers as our guide, we were shown how the revitalisation of
some long-forgotten areas of our city are being brought back to
life in a new and compelling way, while still respecting and
engaging with their heritage.
There is always something wonderful about diving
into the personal and professional journey of a great leader, and
the insights of today's leader, currently the CEO of one of
Geelong's major employers, did not disappoint. As difficult as it
is to do, the 60-minute presentation can really be summed up in
three simple ideas:
- "Leadership is relationship driven."
- "Putting aside time for yourself is vital."
- "Do what you love!"
