As it prepares to depart for the Land Forces 2016 expo, the
Geelong Defence Alliance (GDA) aims to identify more opportunities
for Geelong businesses to diversify into the defence sector.
Organised by Geelong-based organisation Aerospace Maritime and
Defence Foundation of Australia Limited, and this year held at the
Adelaide Convention Centre from September 6-8, this is the second
time Geelong will have a coordinated presence at the defence
"Following the success of the 2014 expo in Brisbane, the GDA has
secured a site within the Victorian Government's stand. Having a
large Geelong presence is vital to raise the profile of our region
at the Land Forces expo," GDA Chairperson Clive Pugh said,
"Promoting the great capacity and capabilities that exists in
Geelong is key to engaging with the Defence industry and exploring
the opportunities to diversify."
The GDA recently hosted an industry briefing with industry
experts which was an opportunity for local businesses to learn more
about defence programs, and how to get the most out of attending
"We had a fantastic turn out of businesses, some who already
have contracts in the defence sector and are looking for more, as
well as businesses with no defence experience wanting to see if
they can diversify into the industry," Mr Pugh said.
With the attention now focussed on the Land Forces 2016, the GDA
- including delegates from City of Greater Geelong (Enterprise
Geelong), Geelong Manufacturing Council, Committee for Geelong,
Winchester Australia, Victorian Government and Deakin University -
will support Geelong businesses with connections and opportunities
at the expo.
"So far, we are aware of nine Geelong businesses that are
attending the expo. The GDA will assist these businesses with
referrals, introductions and networking opportunities with key
defence personnel and Governments."
Land Forces 2016 is a targeted three-day program of business
development seminars, round tables and networking opportunities.
The expo promotes the development of Australia's industrial,
manufacturing and ICT resources in the land defence and military
"Supply chain opportunities exist across a wide range of
activities including manufacturing, engineering, professional
services - digital, medical, education & training - research
and development," Mr Pugh said,
"We are keen to help Geelong businesses explore this sector and
encourage any Geelong business that would like to know more about
the defence sector to get in touch."
The GDA is a collaboration between Geelong based companies and
organisations that have an interest to increase local business
involvement in the defence industry supply chain. Member
organisations include Winchester Australia, City of Greater
Geelong, Geelong Manufacturing Council, Geelong Chamber of
Commerce, G21 - Geelong Region Alliance, Committee for Geelong,
Regional Development Victoria, Deakin University, BOC and
Communications Officer, Committee for Geelong
