Blog - Masterclass with Andrew Jones

Alumni Guest Blogger:   Philippa Bakes (LfG 2010/12)

Keynote Speaker:           Andrew Jones, Co-Founder, G2 Innovation

Venue:                              Australia Post Small Business Hub

Masterclass Session:     3 (Final session)

The third in the Leaders' Masterclass series did not disappoint. We are very lucky that Andrew Jones' wife persuaded him to move from the UK back to her home town a couple of years ago, as he has now established the Australian branch of his business G2 here in Geelong. Put simply, he advises businesses on "how to do innovation" and gave us a snap shot of the topic.

The pace of change in technology has never been faster than it is now - your kids will probably be doing jobs that aren't even invented yet. Andrew walked us through some mind-blowing examples of new technology that already exist or are very close to doing:

  • 3D printed houses that cost only $20,000
  • A self-driving truck with robots in the back, making products en route to be delivered
  • A robotic kitchen that will make your dinner for you and do the washing up afterwards

He also highlighted some of recent success stories that have broken the historic mould of how business is done (Uber, with no vehicles; AirBNB with no property; Facebook with no content).

Andrew talked about the key focus to successful innovation being understanding what your customer actually wants (rather than what you want to deliver) and finding a way to give them a better experience.

He also stressed that the key to finding that creative spark is a result of knowledge plus insight and that we all have the inherent skill to be creative, it just needs to be developed.

Lastly, that innovation won't happen in your business if we as leaders do not exhibit the right behaviours - showing to our teams that it is OK to fail (and learn) and take some risks. Innovation needs to be something in your strategy and supported by the right culture for it to flourish.
