Activate Program #2 - Week 2

Activate Participant:      Aaron Elsey

Position:                           Executive Assistant to the General Manager

Organisation:                  Geelong Performing Arts Centre

Session:                           Week 2

Time being relative was definitely on display today. Some changes can take well…what year is it? Some can happen so quickly, like it was always that way. It's amazing how quickly things can develop when you take a group of people eager to push themselves, give them the right tools, the right encouragement and allow them to go for it. This is only the second time we have all met as a group yet there is already a strong identity growing with its own culture (it's a good one by the way). To me it feels like we have been working together much longer than just two sessions.

When thinking about my entry I started by writing down words that sprung to mind. Participation, activity, challenge, exploring, momentum, coffee… (the true first step of any great journey in my opinion). All very useful descriptors but the one that stood out foremost in my mind was permission

Permission to open up, permission to ask questions we may have kept to ourselves and so on.

This permission was not just from our excellent facilitators, but coming from ourselves.

I made an effort to look around and think about how different people looked today in comparison to last week. I noticed how people are opening up, not just to the group but to themselves. I saw faces that seemed reserved on our first morning now open to whatever comes next. One group member looked like they had discovered a new energy they couldn't wait to apply to an upcoming project. That energy is contagious and it goes great with coffee.

And to think we have six more sessions to go? It won't feel like just eight weeks.
