Activate #3 - Session four blog

Week four of the Activate Leadership program was held in the beautiful Wurdi Youang South Room at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre. Upon arrival, everyone was greeted to a beautiful lunch to get us all ready for the wonderful afternoon ahead. The view of Geelong from the balcony was nothing short of spectacular, and it set the scene for a brilliant day discussing and learning about 'adaptive leadership.' This included advice on how we can aid others to thrive, to handle challenging situations, and how to deal with change in an organisation.

The first speaker of the afternoon was Clive Pugh, who is the General Manager of Winchester Australia. Clive gave us an insight into his love for Geelong and the community, and spoke of the leadership qualities and management style he brings to his role and his company. Clive shared a key insight into Winchester and their values; they're either known as 'above the line,' which will help the company, or 'below the line,' which hinders the company's growth.  Similarly, the group also noted another key learning from Clive, which as leaders, we should always give something back.

Damien O'Malley from OMC Group gave us a facilitated workshop on 'adaptive leadership' and shared his knowledge on how leaders in an organisation deal with change, the different types of barriers that we could face and what tools and knowledge we'd need in order to deal with those. For example, if a problem were to arise we should take a step back and "get on the balcony" to get a better view of the situation. This will ultimately lead to a better outcome and for the issue to be resolved more efficiently.

By the afternoon, the whole group had better knowledge and a greater understanding of what adaptive leadership is and how we can deal with the differences between groups, staff, clients, and how to collaborate it together to reach the best outcome for the organisation.
